You are not alone

Kristin and I have spent much of 2017 with you. We have had many excuses. Some real, but most where just extensions of our fear. Leading us to waste a lot of time, that is so precious. Join us in this podcast episode as we look at some of our biggest excuses, and some of the excuses we hear all the time. And how we can start working past them to live a year with no more excuses.

Episode 116 – Surviving the Holidays

Listen to the show on iTunes, Stitcher, YouTube, Google Play Music, iHeart Radio, or with the player above.

Holidays can be crazy!

Especially if you run a small business.  In the United States, it seems the craziness from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day can destroy us.  However, we do not have the Rocket War Day every Easter Day like in Chios island in Greece. It takes surviving the holidays to a whole new level.

Survival is key if you want to thrive a holiday season like we talked about in Episode 67 - Thriving through peak season. However, not everyone is busy during the holidays. If we are slow sometimes survival is more difficult so this year Kristin and I decided to look at both.

Busy

  1. Get organized before the rush
    1. Remember what worked and what didn’t last year
  2. Stay organized during the rush
  3. Hire help! Lots of college students come home around the beginning of December
  4. Cross train your staff

Slow

  1. Get some planning done for next...

Episode 82 – Breaking out of your burnout

Hi my name is Jeff, and I spent years burned out.

If I was ever going to start a self-help group, each speaker would start off saying that statement.

A couple of years ago, I started breaking out of nearly permanent burnout. My work was suffering, my relationships were suffering, and I was just not happy.

I questioned my ability to be a proper husband. Maybe, I was a total failure.  I believed it was only a matter of time before every else knew the level of failure that I had achieved.

I even spent several long afternoons with a therapist trying to figure out why I felt guilty not getting killed in a war.

The therapy helped some. I knew part of why I felt so guilty. However, I did not break out of my funk. I was stuck. I was burned out, and to defend my therapist, I never asked for help with burnout. I just wanted to get past my survivor’s guilt.

Then I finally recognized that was burned out.

My wife, Kristin gave me Jon Acuff’s book “Start...

Episode 56 - Reducing stress through automation

In this episode, we discuss how to create systems and use automation to cut your task list, save time, and reduce your stress. What could be better than that?

Assess your business for stressors

What stresses you out? Are there tasks you hate or dread? Make a list of all the things that cause stress in your life to see if there are ways you can automate.

Think about all aspects of your life. Could hiring someone to clean your house or mow your lawn help with your stress levels? Remember your own value when determining what to outsource and automate. This weekend, we purchased a $600 Dyson vacuum. Why? Because it cut the time to vacuum the house by 80%. We didn't need to vacuum the same spot over and over again. Instead of spending hours vacuuming, it took about 30 minutes. Our house will be less dusty, which will help with our allergies and it will save us time. This is an extreme example but for us, it was a worthwhile purchase and I (Kristin) am much less stressed out. The...
